November 25 1809, Perleberg, 75 miles north-west of Berlin. British envoy, Benjamin Bathurst walks out of an inn towards his coach. He 'walked around the horses' and - in front of witnesses - vanished into thin air. Or did he? Bathurst was no innocent. He was on a mission for the British Foreign Secretary to build an Anglo-Austrian alliance against France's Napoleon. As such, he was a wanted man by the French and began racing back to London. Perleberg was a frontier town where opposing troops and rogues rubbed shoulders. As Bathurst stepped from the inn to his coach, he was either snatched by Napoleonic agents or mugged by locals who had noted Bathurst with a watch and a sum of money. Either way, and despite the legend, there were no witnesses to his disappearance, supernatural or not. Items of Bathurst's clothing were discovered in the following weeks. A poorly phrased news article embedded a supernatural twist of events into popular 19th century culture.
